Anti-discrimination legislation in works

Labor Ministry says that a set of new laws, including that meant to fight discrimination, will be adopted in parliament this year. State Secretary Zoran Martinovic told Beta news agency on Sunday that this law will envisage protection against all forms of discrimination, and sanction discriminatory behavior. Anti-discrimination legislation in works The law has been in the pipeline since 2004, with its third draft now undergoing the final revisions. "All types of discrimination will be taken into account, including racial, ethnic, and discrimination related to language, gender and age," he explained. Martinovic added that the law also provides for setting up of an ombudsman's office that will start proceedings against institutions or individuals, while citizens will also be able to file private lawsuits. According to this legislation, penalties could range from RSD 10,000 to 100,000, while one possible action threatened against those found guilty of discrimination is to publicly announce their identities. The state secretary said that the victims of discrimination in Serbia are mostly the Roma, disabled persons and women. Their right to education and employment is most commonly infringed on.
