The Kosovo assembly speaker today reacted to Friday's arrests of ex-KLA members suspected of war crimes by demanding their release. Jakup Krasniqi in Pristina on Saturday condemned the MUP operation, and said that Serbia "is trying to provoke the Kosovo authorities". "Belgrade still tied to terror, genocide" "The arrests and the strong military presence in the Presevo valley are aimed at intimidating the Albanian residents there, but just as before, this goal will not be realized," he said. Krasniqi also accused the authorities in Belgrade of "anti-Albanian policy", and of "not being able to break the ties with the policy of Serb terror and genocide". Krasniqi himself is a former KLA spokesman. The group ethnic Albanians, former KLA members, arrested yesterday is suspected of kidnapping, torture and monstrous killings of at least 51 Serb civilians in the Gnjilane area after the end of the 1999 war in Kosovo.
