Lt. Gen. Zdravko Ponos’s absence at a recent Ministry of Defense reception has sparked rumors of a feud between him and Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac. Daily Politika writes that military chief-of-staff told his closest associates not to attend the reception in an attempt to send a message to Serbian defense circles. Rumors flying of MoD feud Ponos’ office is angry at the way state money is being spent by the ministry. The daily states that there was enough money for the ministry, but that it was not spent and returned to the state budget, something that is blamed on the minister. Ponos has not concealed his ire at this. He also says that talks of reform are nothing but a marketing ploy and that nothing has been done to achieve progress. According to the daily, there is severe criticism that investments in technology were symbolic and some have even gone so far as to say that certain element of battle readiness have been compromised. Both Ponos and the minister have said that professionalization of the military will have to be put on hold because of the international economic crisis and cutbacks. Army top brass believes that money is not the problem, rather a lack of knowledge and a neglect of essential goals, which is being blamed on the general. Politika writes that Sutanovac is trying to avoid taking a defensive position. Sutanovac says that the work carried out on reforms has been unprecedented, and that more has been achieved recently than in the last 20 years. Ministry officials believe that Ponos’ refusal to attend the reception was childish, according to the daily. Politika states Ponos believes that he reports to President Boris Tadic and not the minister, adding that Sutanovac only runs the service of the ministry, and is not his superior.
