Russian deminers on Sunday completed a bomb clearance operation at the Nis airport. Russia's state agency Emerkom was in this southern city to remove the unexploded bombs thrown there by NATO warplanes as they attacked Serbia nine years ago. Russians clean Nis airport of bombs "The special team combed through an area of 737,000 sq meters, locating and safely disposing of 451 cluster bombs and other explosive devices," Serbian Center for Mine Clearance Director Petar Mihajlovic announced. Mihajlovic also said that his center supervised the operation, and that it was done in line with international standards pertaining to humanitarian demining. A ceremony at the airport saw the grounds swept for explosive devices officially handed over for safe use. Emerkom's Oleg Beleventsev attended, as did MUP, MoD and city of Nis officials. The project was financed by the Russian government which set aside some USD 6mn for the purpose. Mihajlovic announced that cooperation with the Russian side would continue.
