European Commission representatives and Kosovo government officials have begun work on preparing a feasibility study. At a meeting of the Stabilization and Association Process Tracking Mechanism (STM) in Kosovo held yesterday in Pristina, the focus was on the 2008 report on progress in implementing European standards in political and economic criteria, as well as Kosovo’s capacities for adopting EU laws and provisions. EC feasibility study for Kosovo The 15th meeting of its kind confirmed the EU’s commitment towards Kosovo, beginning with preparation for the Feasibility Study that the Commission is due to present in autumn 2009. The meeting was opened by Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and was attended by EC Director for the West Balkans Pierre Mirel and EU envoy to Kosovo Pieter Feith. Thaci stressed that “European integration is a lengthy and challenging process, but that the process itself is more important than membership, because democratic values are reformed and accepted during that process, and, at the same time, the quality of Kosovo citizens’ lives is improved.“ Mirel stressed that the numerous debates held on the Commission report last year was viewed as a good sign in the EU. The STM is a working framework used by the European Commission and Kosovo administration to regularly track technical and political issues linked to “the European agenda.“ Plenary meetings are held twice a year, and are accompanied by sector meetings. The EU and Kosovo have been holding talks on European integration since 2002, which was when the EU officially split Serbia and Kosovo’s EU integration processes.
