The Hague Tribunal prosecution does not wish to state its position on Radovan Karadzic’s request for the court to pay for the preparation of his defense. The former Bosnian Serb leader submitted the motion, calling to be allowed to enter the case on an equal footing with the prosecution. No response to latest Karadzic request In response to Karadzic’s motion, the prosecution stated that it “does not wish to assume a position on his request,“ without divulging the reasons for its decision. Last week, Karadzic asked the Tribunal to provide him with an experienced, adequately-paid lawyer, as otherwise his right to a defense would be seriously compromised. Previously, the Secretariat had temporarily undertaken to pay the two advisers the defendant had hired, but at a rate deemed inadequate by Karadzic. The former Bosnian Serb leader was arrested in Belgrade on July 21 and extradited to the Hague a few days later to face charges of war crimes committed on the territory of the former Yugoslavia.
