Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic said Tuesday she has adjourned the current parliament session because MPs debated "some issues which were not on the agenda". The main issue raised by the Serbian lawmakers - the opposition's accusation that Belgrade International Nikola Tesla Airport Director Bojan Kristo is guilty of fraud - is "not unimportant", the speaker continued, "but if it is used for political obstruction, it makes no sense". MPs digress again, says speaker If MPs spend the whole day discussing what others should do instead of doing their own job, it is better to adjourn, in the hope of reaching agreement to debate important laws, Djukic-Dejanovic was quoted as saying by Tanjug. The speaker, from the ruling SPS ticket, noted that the current agenda focuses on amendments to crucial laws on the judiciary concerning a new network of courts and the election of judges. "For the first time in Serbia, judges are to be elected by their peers rather than by politicians, and MP's must focus on doing their job well," she advised. Earlier on Tuesday, MPs were sticking to the agenda, when they started a debate on the draft Law on Judges. Djukic-Dejanovic said early on in the session that the new Vojvodina statute would be included on the agenda once the accompanying Law on Vojvodina’s Jurisdictions arrived too. Prior to this, Vojvodina Hungarian Coalition leader Balint Pastor asked for an explanation of Djukic-Dejanovic’s comments that it was not feasible for the statute to be put on the state parliament’s agenda by the end of year. Djukic-Dejanovic said that she would meet with parliamentary whips and look into the matter of the accompanying law further. Pastor said that the “vast majority of Vojvodina residents want parliament to approve the statute, because the issue of decentralization is very important,” adding that Serbia was the most centralized country in Europe. He said that the government was focused on taking Serbia into the European Union and on social justice, neither of which was possible without decentralization. MPs were set to discuss particulars concerning the Law on Court Governance, with amendments to a further five draft laws for the court system left to debate.
