A status conference is underway at the Hague Tribunal, a part of the appeal process in the case of Ramush Haradinaj, Idriz Balaj and Lahi Brahimaj. Two of the three Kosovo Albanians – Haradinaj and Balaj – were acquitted on all 37 counts of the indictment charging them with war crimes. Brahimaj was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of cruel treatment and torture of two fellow Kosovo Albanians. Status conference on Haradinaj appeal The prosecution said in its appeal that the court process had ended ahead of time and requested an opportunity to present the evidence, related to murders and abuse in the Jablanica camp, once again. Initially, the three former warlords were charged with murder, imprisonment, torture and rape of Serb, Albanian and Roma civilians in western Kosovo in 1998, a year before the war broke out in the province. The prosecution says that it has been denied the right to a just trial, since the chamber of judges did not allow additional time for two key witnesses, one of which, Shefcet Kabashi, is a former KLA member himself. His statement was included in the appeal filed against the verdict. Brahimaj has lodged an appeal of his own, denying the credibility of two key witnesses against him, both formerly imprisoned at Jablanica. He is seeking lower jail time or acquittal.
