Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic says Serbia's EU integration has been increasingly hampered over the past 6 months by the difficulties within the EU and Serbia itself. Speaking in the closing part of the public debate on the national program for Serbia's EU integration, Djelic pointed out that Serbia had an additional condition on its road to the EU—achieving full cooperation with The Hague Tribunal—not to mention the problems in regional cooperation relating to Kosovo. Djelic: Integration increasingly hampered “The so-called Hague condition has been particularly highlighted in recent months, while Serbia lacks the understanding of its neighbors for its particular difficulties, with certain states having recognized Kosovo,” the minister explained. “Moreover, instead of looking to the future, some neighbors are filing charges against Serbia with the International Court of Justice, with the only logical response left to Serbia being to seek full justification for itself in the same way,” he said. As regards the problems in the EU, Djelic explained that, due to the global financial crisis, the issue of integration with Europe and EU enlargement "are being placed in a more difficult framework." “The rejection of the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland has created institutional problems in the EU, while the European Parliament elections and the German parliamentary elections next year are creating additional tensions within the EU political system,” he surmised.
