No decision will be made on the local authorities in Zrenjanin until the police decide whether to press charges against the arrested city officials, say the DS. Zrenjanin Mayor Goran Knezevic, who was elected to office in the May local ballot on the Democratic Party (DS) ticket, was arrested on October 1 along with municipal urban planning chief Nikola Halas, Financial Chief David Dimkic, and the owner of the Novi Sad-based company Gvozden, Grgur Ugljesa. DS awaiting police decision in Zrenjanin Regional envoy and DS Municipal Board Chairman Bratislav Tomic is also in custody. He is suspected of fixing a municipal tender, and the whole group is accused of embezzling EUR 3.5mn in the so-called Construction Mafia case. The group is suspected of illegally fixing construction tenders and engaging in other criminal activities related to this sector. The case is in the jurisdiction of the Special Organized Crime Prosecution. Town Assembly Speaker Aleksandra Martom said that the local administration was having trouble working, but that the local assembly was taking all the necessary decisions, while Deputy Mayor Goran Kalic said that everything was under control and like it was “before the scandal,” which could be seen from the arrival of new investors.
