Former Yugoslav FM Goran Svilanovic says criticism coming from the EU of Serbia is constructive as the country progresses on the road to integration. A recent European Commission (EC) delegation in Belgrade report on the process of stabilization and association named corruption and political influence on the courts as the main problems in Serbia. "Economy matters on path to EU" However, according to Svilanovic, this report is not hostile. The former diplomat told B92 Radio that one of the defining factors of Serbia’s EU integration will be the ability of the country to deal with big everyday issues, such as corruption. “It is not an unfriendly report. It is a report of people who sit in the European Commission. The European Commission is the most inclined towards Serbia in the system of the European Union institutions,” Svilanovic claims, adding that the EC sees "every success of Serbia as its own". “That goes for other countries as well. It is their job to get us closer. They do not make political decision for us to become members, someone else does that, but they are not successful unless Serbia completes all the criteria and becomes ready for membership,” Svilanovic said. He believes said that "the door of Europe could open for Serbia" if Belgrade were to solve questions of corruption, influence of the government on the court system and other important issues, instead of political challenges such as EULEX, Kosovo and the Hague Tribunal. Svilanovic said that the media and non-governmental sector play an important role in solving the state problems, adding that they create public pressure and raise these problems to such a level that prevents politicians from ignoring them.
