Slovenia's success is proof that the EU should spread to all of the Western Balkans, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband told a Maribor newspaper. Miliband was interviewed by the daily Dnevnik while in Ljubljana earlier this week, where he accompanied Queen Elizabeth II during her visit. "All of Balkans in EU" "All the Western Balkan countries should join the European Union. I think that the role of the EU is to be a magnet for these new states," he was quoted as saying by the newspaper. Dnevnik also writes that Miliband pointed to Slovenia as the best argument in favor of this position, with the country's successful development since it joined the EU. "Slovenia is exhibiting a good mixture of national pride and international responsibility, along with a sense of its identity which is not jeopardized by European and international integrations," the British foreign secretary said. Croatia's Hina news agency reports today that in an entry dedicated to his Slovenia visit, Miliband wrote in his blog that Slovenian politicians told him their national identity was jeopardized in Austria-Hungary and Yugoslavia by "imperial nations", which "dominated those historic integrations".
