The Serbian Orthodox Church last night confirmed rumors that His Holiness Patriarch Pavle has requested to withdraw from active service. Patriarch withdraws amid speculation But despite immediate media speculation as to the identity of his heir, the SPC says there can be no favorites, due to the complex procedure of his selection. Metropolitan Amfilohije was the high ranking dignitary that last night confirmed the patriarch's resignation, after a Holy Synod session in Belgrade. The same, highest SPC body, will meet on November 11 to approve Patriarch Pavle's request. Any of the heads of eparchies that have spent at least five years in that position can now become candidates for the new SPC patriarch. The candidates will be proposed in a secret vote, with three winning more than half the votes of the Synod members making it to the short list. The voting will proceed in rounds until these candidates win the necessary number of votes. After this, a dignitary will be named to unseal an envelope and draw one of the three notes, bearing the names of the three candidates. Due to this procedure, Bishop Irinej of Nis told the state television RTS last night that there can be no favorites, and said that the rules, which will see the next patriarch effectively selected in a draw, mean that planning for someone's preferred choice to win is impossible.
