The awards ceremony for the 53rd annual International Belgrade Book Fair has been held at the Belgrade City Assembly. The award for best publisher of the year at the fair was given to the Geopolitika publishing house. Belgrade Book Fair awards ceremony “This Is How We Lived” was awarded the prize for best children’s book, “Zenith 1921-1926” received the award for best publishing venture, while “Kolo” received the Serbian Literary Society’s award. The award for the best presentation at the fair went to Kreativni Center, while “Heraldry and Serbs” was named the most beautiful book. Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas welcomed everyone to the ceremony that was also attended by the representative of this year’s special guest country, Japan, Ambassador Tadashi Nagai. Djilas congratulated the award winners and stated that he was pleased with the quality of presentations at the book fair and the interest, stating that over 200,000 visitors had already come to the book fair this year. He said that more time needed to be devoted to teaching children about the culture of reading. “We will do everything we can as a city to make sure more children come to the fair and help schools if we deem it necessary, to make reading a habit for children. For us who are older, who have the habit, we have it—but for those who don’t, it is way too late,” Djilas said. Top publisher Geopolitika celebrated its 15th anniversary this year, and the publishing house’s director, writer Vladislav Bajac, said that nothing would be possible without the readers. “Only one question presents itself: Can we persevere or can we keep it up? Persevere in a semi- economic sense, and keep it up in terms of quality, which is essentially the hardest job in publishing because we are all subject to this phenomenon known as economic liberalism,” Bajac said.
