The ruling HDZ has vehemently condemned the use of ustasha or others chants with racist, extremist or radical overtones at sporting events. The Croatian Democratic Community (HDZ) vehemently condemned and rejected all kinds of chanting at sporting events that had nothing to do with European aspirations or “civility“, party leader and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader told a meeting of the HDZ Presidency on Monday. HDZ condemns racism on sporting terraces Sanader took the opportunity to voice his thoughts on ustasha, racist and political chanting that suggested extremism or radicalism of any kind. “I emphatically condemn and call on legitimate institutions, as well as on fans and clubs’ boards of directors, to work together to eradicate this from sports grounds,“ said the HDZ leader, adding that these chants were not supporting, as they were frequently accompanied by violence, both on and off the pitch. He said the the HDZ’s aim was to turn matches into events where families could go together, without the fear of violence, like in England, which had once been renowned as a hotbed of hooliganism. Sanader called on Croatian Football Union bosses to stop playing down ustasha chanting with claims that these were part of the so-called “Nikola Subic Zrinski“ opera, a reference to a Croatian folk hero of the 16th century. “That has nothing to do with opera or patriotism, I condemn it vehemently and I think that it’s time that all factors in society became fully aware of that,“ said the HDZ leader, calling on fans to resist “the calls of hooligans and savages.“ Ivo Sanader (FoNet, archive)
