Vojislav Kostunica says that acceptance of the EULEX mission would be tantamount to accepting the Ahtisaari Plan, and thereby Kosovo independence. EULEX stems from the Martti Ahtisaari Plan and “comes with one clear aim to create the institutions of an independent Kosovo, and therefore there is not a single reason, legal or otherwise, to accept his mission,“ the Democratic Party of Serbia leader told journalists after a presentation of his book, “The Defense of Kosovo“, in Novi Sad. "Accepting EULEX means accepting independence" The comments come after President Boris Tadic said that there was a possibility of the EU and Serbia agreeing over the deployment of the EULEX mission in Kosovo, but on condition that the mission has UN Security Council consent, that it has neutral status, and that it does not apply the Ahtisaari Plan. EULEX Chief Yves de Kermabon said yesterday that an agreement with Belgrade over the deployment of the mission was “not far away“ De Kermabon, speaking to Vienna daily Kurir, stressed that it was necessary to allow the mission to do its work before criticizing it. “The populace’s expectations of EULEX are very high. We will always face critical voices. Moreover, it should be borne in mind that the mission is still not fully operative. We need to allow it to work before our actions are judged. But, constructive criticism is always welcome,“ he said. Vojislav Kostunica (FoNet, archive)
