The Belgrade city assembly has appointed 18 directors of public enterprises and services for a period of four years. Although they were selected at a public competition to prevent politicization of the city administration, party members have nonetheless filled half of the 18 posts. Mayor Dragan Djilas says that he is happy with the appointments. “Over 50 percent of the candidates were non-party people and I’m happy. I can say that of the Democratic Party’s eight candidates, five were not party members, three were,“ he said. “I think this is a big step in depoliticizing city structures, but every new beginning is difficult and painful, but we’ll need some more time before that sinks in,“ Djilas said. The opposition again criticized the appointments, claiming that the process had been a farce. “I think the mayor is obliged to inform the public about this issue in a proper manner, and I don’t know why you’re ducking this,“ said the Democratic Party of Serbia’s Andreja Mladenovic. “You have a chance to explain it all nicely, and your claims that you’ve met the conditions for depoliticization are, of course, rubbish. Those solutions were offered by political parties,“ he said. Although depoliticization of the city administration was one of the conditions of the Liberal Democratic Party’s support for city government, they have no objections to the appointments.
