French ambassador to Belgrade Jean Francois Terral says that Serbia cannot be pro-EU and oppose the EULEX mission in Kosovo at the same time. Asked by Belgrade daily Danas whether cooperation with the EULEX mission in Kosovo was a condition for Serbia receiving EU candidate status, Terral replied that it was not so much a condition, as an issue that should be tackled “logically and rationally.” “Serbian EULEX position contradictory” "Do you really think that you can be pro- European Union, while at the same time you refuse to accept the mission of that same Union in Kosovo? That’s a contradictory position,” Terral told the daily. Meanwhile, UK Ambassador Stephen Wordsworth said that the EULEX mission was focused on improving the rule of law and order in Kosovo, and that the Serbian government had recognized that the EULEX mission was in the best interests of everyone living in the province. "The transfer of UNMIK’s tasks to EULEX, which was ordered by the UN secretary-general, is going very well,” Wordsworth said, adding that he hoped that Serbia would “as a country that has EU aspirations, support the EU mission in Kosovo.” Wordsworth said that the mission had been supported by all EU member-states, even those who had not recognized Kosovo’s independence, adding that EULEX was not linked to the issue of Kosovo’s status. French ambassador echoed the UK ambassador’s views that EULEX mission did not pre-judge the province’s status, adding that the mission’s objective was to guarantee the rule of law and to protect ethnic minorities, especially the Serbs. Both diplomats still hope that Serbia will support EULEX’s deployment throughout the entire territory of Kosovo.
