President Boris Tadic will receive the prestigious Quadriga award from the Werkstatt Deutschland (Workshop Germany) association later today in Berlin. The award, presented every year on German Unity Day, is given out for bravery, vision and commitment that makes the world a better place. Tadic to receive Quadriga award He will be handed the award by Austrian President Heinz Fischer. During his stay in the German capital, Tadic has met with the leadership of the EU’s most powerful country to discuss the situation in Kosovo and German support for Serbia on her path to European integration. Previous winners of the Quadriga award include Helmut Kohl, Gerhard Schroeder, Shimon Peres, Viktor Yushchenko and Hamid Karzai. The award’s name comes from the bronze sculpture on top of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, depicting the Goddess Victory. During the Cold War, it was a reminder of the clash of ideologies in the world, while today it is a symbol of the struggle for unity and cohesion. “This award is proof that Serbia has not been cut off or expelled from Europe,“ said Tadic, who took advantage of his trip to Berlin to convey to his hosts that no-one could condition Serbia’s EU integration on recognition of Kosovo independence. “No-one, not even the political structures I represent, can blackmail me into recognizing Kosovo in return for EU membership. If somebody should set that as a condition I’ll choose my country’s integrity and I’ll respect my country’s Constitution,“ underlined the president. Germany is eager for Serbia and the Western Balkans to integrate into the EU and find a solution, notwithstanding the fact Belgrade and Berlin have contrasting visions of the province’s future status. “Germany considers it her political goal and the most important stage in the EU enlargement process. For me, Germany’s official policy is very important as I am convinced that without Germany’s key support there is no European future for Serbia,“ he added. Highlighting the arrest of Radovan Karadzic as proof of Serbia’s willingness to cooperate with the Hague, Tadic said that Serbia would complete cooperation with the Tribunal so that no-one could ever accuse Serbia of being an uncivilized nation.
