Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas says that he hopes that one section of the bypass around the capital will be finished by October 15. The section in question is from Ostruznica to the Orlovaca junction. Mayor visits Belgrade bypass construction site Djilas visited the construction site of the bypass last night, along with National Investment Plan Minister Verica Kalanovic and Infrastructure Minister Milutin Mrkonjic. Workers have been pouring concrete on to the carriageway of Bridge 11 for three days straight. The construction site is illuminated by floodlights every night. Though workers say that it is harder to work at night, they add that the lack of sunlight is not proving to be any more dangerous, stating that they have got used to the conditions. The ministers and mayor said that they were happy that work was continuing around the clock. “They are now working full throttle and at maximum capacity. Full credit when someone employs people to working two or even three shifts a day. We should not talk about what’s behind us but what is ahead, and to try and finish everything by October 15. We have been waiting for this for 17 years. If you ask me, every day is important because the congestion is immense. Our job is to help these people who are working 24 hours a day, and when they finish we can then analyze whether it could have been done a day or two earlier. I don’t think that is the most important thing right now,” Djilas said. “We’ve shown that it was possible to secure the funds to enable the bypass to be finished by the deadlines we set. I truly hope that we’ll finish all of Corridor 10 by the end of this government’s mandate, and this bypass will be proof that we can do it,” Kalanovic said. In 2008, the National Investment Plan and the City of Belgrade set aside EUR 35.2mn and EUR 28.7mn for the bypass respectively. While the section from Ostruznica to the Orlovaca junction is due for completion in October, the entire bypass is expected to take a further three years. Dragan Djilas (FoNet)
