Former bIA deputy chief Milorad Bracanovic will continue serving his two year prison sentence after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal. The Supreme Court decided today in Belgrade that “the purpose of the punishment has not been achieved yet”, even though the time for possible parole has passed. Former BIA deputy’s appeal rejected Bracanovic appealed the decision of the court which rejected his request to be set free. The former intelligence agency deputy head was sentenced to two years in prison for failure to report the planning of a crime, in relation to the murder of Ivan Stambolic and the attempted murder of Vuk Draskovic. For years, Bracanovic was close to Milorad Ulemek, a.k.a. Legija. He was a security officer in the Special Operations Unit, JSO, which Ulemek commanded, and was named BIA deputy director after this unit’s rebellion in 2001. Both stated in several court appearances that they were friends. Ulemek was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Stambolic and 40 years a piece for the murder of prime minister Zoran Djindjic and four Serbian Renewal Movement officials in the Ibarska case. He was also found guilty in several cases involving the criminal gang known as the Zemun Clan, for the crimes that include murder and kidnapping.
