Organizers of the first Queer Festival in Sarajevo have halted the event after clashes that left ten people injured. Even though a large number of organizations and associations have condemned the violence, it seemed as everyone involved, especially the members of the law enforcement, welcomed the decision, reports say. Therefore, the festival planned to last for five days, to all intents and purposes ended before it began. Organizers, including President of the Queer Association Svetlana Djurkovic, said they would find a way to present the prepared art work in another venue. Many political parties, intellectuals, NGOs and human rights associations have condemned the violence. Members of the Islamic Wahhabi movement are seen as the main suspects orchestrating the violence, while they themselves were happy to take on the role of the protest leaders. However, our reporter in Sarajevo says, it is clear that unison chanting heard during the unrest was not the work of the Wahhabis. Sarajevo citizens are fairly certain that football fans have also been involved in the violence, as was the case during similar events in several big cities of the former Yugoslav republics.
