Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic said that cooperation between the state and civil sector is a necessity in Serbia. He added that the two must cooperate in order to create a strong, democratic society. PM speaks of importance of civil sector Attending the five-year anniversary gathering of the Balkan Fund for Democracy in Belgrade on Friday, Cvetkovic said that this organization has been working on building a democratic society. “Serbian government have since 2000 recognized the experience and knowledge of the civil sector in building democratic institutions and we will continue to push forward the status of civil organizations in the future,” the prime minister said. He added that the government has adopted and sent to parliament a proposal for a law on associations, adding that the legal foundation is only the first step in the development of the civil sector. “Institutional protection has more meaning in the light of a sped-up process of Serbia’s integration into the European Union, because a society ready for further development in one of the necessary conditions for joining the European Union,” Cvetkovic said. He added that the government is a trustworthy partner which the civil sector can count on in the further democratization of the society. President of the Fund Ivan Vejvoda read a letter written by President Boris Tadic, addressing the anniversary gathering. Tadic said that democracy, the rule of law and human rights are key values for a stable development of the society and the prosperity of all citizens. Cvetkovic addresses the gathering today (FoNet)
