Jusice minister says that the documentation concerning the Kovacevic case has not yet been sent to the Serbian authorities. “We are still waiting for the documentation to be delivered and we have permanent contacts with the U.S. Department of Justice," the minister said. U.S. fails to send Kovacevic docs. “I hope that in the next couple of days we would have the direction to take in solving this problem,” Snezana Malovic told journalists in Belgrade today. She reminded that Serbia’s laws, including the constitution, forbid extradition of citizens to foreign authorities, and added that the original evidence or their copies, once Americans have sent them, would be forwarded to the Serbian prosecution. Malovic said that the prosecution would then decide whether there were elements to launch proceedings against Miladin Kovacevic, and explained her ministry had no jurisdiction in the matter. Kovacevic is a Serbian who studied in the United States, where he was involved in a bar brawl and was subsequently accused of inflicting serious injuries to a fellow student. He was then released on bail pending trial, while his passport was confiscated by a New York court. However, Kovacevic obtained temporary documents from Serbia's consulate-general in that city, and fled to Serbia.
