A former aide of Joseph Biden has commented on Barack Obama's VP candidate's Balkan policy. Governor Ted Kaufman, chief of staff and long-time associate of Biden, said in Denver yesterday that should the Delaware senator become vice-president of the United States, Biden will insist that all war-crimes indictees in the Balkans face justice and back the NATO integration of the South-East European countries. "Biden favors Balkans in NATO" "The Balkans is very important for both Europe and the United States," Kaufman told Voice of America, pointing out that he thinks the United States should do "all in its power to integrate the countries of the region into Europe and NATO", to become its equal economic and political partner. He reminded that Biden was "one of the first senators who advocated a more active engagement of the United States in the Balkans", while now he would back the Euro-Atlantic integration of the same region. Kaufman pointed out that Biden advocates punishing all war criminals in the Balkans. He said that the U.S. senator "very much influenced the decision on the last NATO enlargement" and that he would like to see all Balkan countries in NATO. "Biden will back the Balkans, as an example that policy was efficient," Kaufman said, assessing that the United States, "with a multilateral approach and NATO support", have "secured peace and stability in the region for over ten years".
