In a new statement, Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Konuzin again expressed Moscow's backing for Serbia over Kosovo. Konuzin told the state television RTS that his country would continue to support Serbia in its fight for the preservation of its territorial integrity. Ambassador assures of Russian support The diplomat stressed that despite the recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, Russia would continue to back Serbia's efforts to gain support in the UN for its request to the International Court of Justice for an opinion on the legality of the unilateral proclamation of Kosovo independence. "You can be assured that we shall persist in our demands that the right to the preservation of territorial integrity be applied for Serbia. On the other hand, every conflict is a unique case," the ambassador explained. According to Konuzin, the Russian president said Kosovo was "a special situation". The ambassador further said the situation in the Caucasus was different, because Georgia had systematically refused to engage in talks and sign an agreement on the non-use of force.
