Interior Minister Ivica Dacic wants the issue of dual citizenship resolved between Serbia and Montenegro. He said that the normalization of relations between Montenegro and Serbia needed to include dual citizenship, adding that an agreement needed to be reached to settle the problem as soon as possible. Dacic: Dual citizenship important “In order for relations between Serbia and Montenegro to return to normal, an agreement has to exist regarding dual nationality, because Montenegro is saying that everyone who takes up Serbian citizenship must give up their Montenegrin citizenship,” Dacic told Radio Television Serbia. The Serbian government will prepare a draft agreement for dual citizenship by the end of the month, as well as a platform for talks with Montenegrin officials. Dacic said that the proposal would focus on the interests of the several hundred thousand Serbian citizens affected by this issue. The Montenegrin Constitution gives citizens until October 22 to decide whether they want Montenegrin citizenship or that of another country, and according to Dacic’s Montenegrin counterpart Jusuf Kalamperovic, those who receive another country’s citizenship after October 22, forfeit their Montenegrin citizenship. “It will be hard for us to take them away, but we will not be giving out dual citizenship. Serbian nationals who live in Montenegro will be able to receive Montenegrin citizenship if they meet the legal conditions, but on condition that they give up their Serbian citizenship,” Kalamperovic told Montenegro Television.
