The two likely major-party U.S. presidential nominees are locked in a close contest with a number of potential swing voters. The latest Washington Post-ABC News poll indicated the popularity levels of U.S. Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain had not changed much since a month ago, with Obama holding a narrow six-point edge over McCain among registered voters, the Post reported. Poll: Obama, McCain race tight The stability in the numbers point to the unwavering support of the two candidates' committed backers, but the poll indicated far more swing voters were up grabs than was the case at this point in the 2004 U.S. presidential election. In the poll, which was conducted Aug. 19-22 among a random national sample of 1,108 adults, about 30 percent of registered voters - and nearly as many likely voters - said they were "movable," defined as those who are less solidly behind their pick or who have yet to decide. That means the next few weeks could be crucial as Obama and McCain head into their parties' national conventions, the Post said.
