Vitaly Churkin says Moscow cannot support the draft resolution calling for the withdrawal of its troops from Georgia. The Russian ambassador to the UN told a UN Security Council session that the resolution must include and support French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s six-point peace plan, which was signed by Georgia and Russia, Reuters reports. Russia rejects new Georgia draft resolution Since that is not the case, “the Russian Federation cannot support the draft resolution,” Churkin said. The UN Security Council met last night in order to discuss the French draft resolution for Georgia, which calls for Russia to pull its forces back to their pre-conflict positions. The draft that was handed out to Security Council members directly before the start of the session, calls on Georgian forces to return to their bases and demands the full respect of the ceasefire agreed upon between the two countries, according to Reuters. Western diplomats stated that they expected Russia, which has the right of veto, and maybe some other countries from the 15-member Council, to oppose the resolution. The new, very concise, draft resolution distributed to journalists states that the “Security Council supports the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders.” It also demands “the current and complete respect of the ceasefire agreement that both sides signed,” and “the withdrawal of Russian forces behind the line that they occupied before the beginning of hostilities and a return of Georgian forces to their earlier positions.” The draft was initiated by France, “on behalf of the European countries and with the support of the U.S.,” one unnamed diplomat stated.
