Germans face charges over Danube pollution

The Serbian Water Resources Inspectorate filed a complaint against Rhenus PartnerShip GmbH & Co today. The company is the lessee of a convoy of vessels that came to Serbia under the German flag, and dumped a quantity of petroleum coke into the Danube River. Germans face charges over Danube pollution This came upon a complaint of a group of citizens from Smederevo that said the Colmar barge dumped solid waste into the Danube two days ago. The Water Resources Inspectorate consulted with Environment Protection and Inland Waterway Transport inspectors, and found that after cleaning the barge following the unloading of petroleum coke, the crew dumped the remaining quantity into the Danube, the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Resources said in a statement. The dumping of dangerous materials violates the Law on the Waters, so the Inspectorate "filed a complaint for an economic offense" against the German company, the statement said.
