President Boris Tadic on Wednesday summed up the results of Serbia's recent diplomatic blitz. Tadic and Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic were attending the opening of the Beijing Olympics, and used the opportunity to lobby for Serbia's position in the Kosovo status crisis with the world leaders gathered there. "Unwavering commitment to state integrity" The president today expressed satisfaction with the diplomatic results achieved by the Serbian delegation, and said he will not give up on the policy of defending the integrity of the country. "Our delegation defended Serbia's interests, both regarding the initiative before the United Nations General Assembly in connection with the International Court of Justice, from which we are seeking an opinion with the intention that this highest legal institution in the world should express its unequivocal stand on the proclamation of the independence of Kosovo, which Serbia considers an absolutely illegal act, and also when our economic interests are concerned," Tadic said in a statement for the Tanjug news agency. During all the meetings he held in Beijing, Tadic said, he under the impression that Serbia is respected, primarily because of its principled and consistent struggle for the preservation of its integrity, "which is receiving the respect of an increasing numbers of countries all over the world". The president explained that the Serbian delegation, with him at its helm, attempted to secure the support of as many statesmen as possible for Serbia's initiative regarding the International Court of Justice. Tadic said he considers this "the most important foreign-policy initiative of the country in the recent years", and that he also acquainted U.S. President George Bush with it. "I conveyed in brief to President Bush my own stand in connection with Kosovo and Metohija which is quite well known and which Serbia will definitely not relinquish, and that is the preservation of the country's integrity and sovereignty in Kosovo and Metohija. I told him that I would very shortly find a way to send my envoy to the United States who will clarify our stand concerning this initiative and the position which Serbia will not give up on, when Kosovo is concerned," he told the news agency. Tadic set out as particularly important "the very successful bilateral meeting with Chinese President Hu Jiang". One of the results of this meeting is an agreement that Tadic should make an official visit to China by the end of this year, "a visit that should result in very concrete economic projects", according to the president. Tadic was also speaking in Belgrade on Wednesday at a ceremony to mark 195 years of Serbia's Official Gazette. He told the gathering that Serbia will achieve exceptional results "provided each institution takes on even more than what is its basic activity and task". "In that way, Serbia could more quickly complete major national tasks, such as the making of a national dictionary or other lexicographic works," Tadic said, speaking at the event held at the Belgrade City Hall. Tadic opened the official ceremony marking the day the anniversary of the first publication Novine Serbske, a publication succeeded by the Gazette. The Official Gazette, Matica Srpska, and the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) are just some of the institutions that set the standard of how much will be achieved, Tadic said.
