Officials from Serb associations in Croatia are calling on the new government to resolve the issue of refugees. Association Secretary General Milojko Budimir said that refugees from Croatia were still in the same conditions as when they acquired that status 17 years ago. Croatia: Serb refugees call for status solutions “Regardless of the change in government and regime in Serbia, the refugees are not feeling these changes,” Budimir said, adding that refugees expected the new government to begin solving their problems that have been “standing still for years”. Mile Dakic, president of the Association for Helping Refugees and Persecuted Serbs from Croatia, said that refugees from Croatia faced a status problem, adding that some 35,000 complaints had been filed for loss of refugee status. He said that all the documents where Croatia and Serbia had undertaken to resolve refugees’ status problems had turned into dead letters on paper, and that refugees were still unable to exercise their basis rights. Dusan Ecimovic, president of the Society for Peace, Development and Ecology, said that Serbs expected their status in Croatia to improve with the country’s further European integration. He said that the latest changes in the law “are cementing ethnic cleansing in Croatia,” because Serbs in Croatia could not exercise property ownership rights, adding that all the housing programs were just for “pulling the wool over the eyes of the international media.” According to Ecimovic, Serbs in Croatia wanted the same rights as other Croatian citizens, but instead they were still citizens of a lower order, stigmatized and excluded from all spheres of social life. The press conference was held to commemorate the anniversary of Operation Storm.
