Daily Vecernje Novosti writes today that Radovan Karadzic was under around-the-clock BIA watch for three months. “BIA had Karadzic in sights for three months” The report adds that all contact with the former leader of the Bosnian Serbs accused of war crimes was noted while “some were even set up in hopes of getting information from him regarding to whereabouts of other Hague fugitives”. According to the daily, only several people were aware of this, including senior BIA officials, while the new Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, SPS, and President of the Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal Rasim Ljajic “were kept in the dark”. The report continues that most of the government ministers found out about the arrest at the same time that the citizens and media did, on Monday evening, and adds that “it is not known why the command to ‘end the action’ was given precisely on Friday, July 18”. Some believe that three elements came together at that time – a beneficial political moment, the beginning of the new coalition’s mandate (and changes in the BIA), estimates by the agency that Karadzic might have realized that he is trapped, and the breakup of the entire network of helpers after the arrest of Stojan Zupljanin. The daily states that from Friday to Monday DNA analysis were done to make sure the man held in custody was indeed Karadzic, but there is no official information as to where he was being held during those three days.
