The driver of the Belgrade bus that crashed in Croatia last week killing 2 people, has been released pending trial. Igor Jankovic was released from custody after paying bail of EUR 6,000, while the trial date was set for September 23. Since one of the victims, Miroslav Veljkovic , was a Croatian national, the case will remain under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Court in Nova Gradiska. Jankovic has asked for a legal counsel, the possibility to collect evidence, and the opinion of a traffic expert. The municipal prosecution initially called for Jankovic to be remanded in custody, but eventually agreed to allow the defendant to be released on bail. If he fails to appear in court, the money will be retained by the state, a warrant will be issued and Jankovic will be remanded in custody, said Municipal Court Judge Klasnja Petrovic. Two passengers, Miroslav Veljkovic (85) and Jelena Berdan (16), died when the bus Jankovic was driving crashed into a barrier at the side of the Belgrade-Zagreb motorway, before bursting into flames. A further eight people were injured, three of whom seriously.
