Serbian ministers meet with UNMIK chief

Foreign and Kosovo Ministers Vuk Jeremic and Goran Bogdanovic have spoken today with UNMIK Chief Lamberto Zannier. In talks with Zannier, the Serbian ministers reiterated Belgrade’s position that reconfiguration of the international civil presence in Kosovo had to be carried out in line with Resolution 1244, and with the blessing of the UN Security Council, read a statement from the Foreign Ministry. Serbian ministers meet with UNMIK chief The main topics of the meeting were UNMIK reconfiguration, where it was agreed to open a process of talks on reshaping the international mission in the province. Jeremic and Bogdanovic expressed their dissatisfaction with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s unilateral actions, and his attempts to launch the reconfiguration process without a Security Council resolution. During the talks, a special focus was placed on the issue of the courts and police in Kosovo, over which agreement was reached to consider both issues as soon as possible. The ministers said that it was important to devote considerable attention to the life of the Serb community in the province, the preservation of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and it was stressed that permanent contact with UNMIK representatives was vital. Zannier said that UNMIK wanted to preserve peace and stability in the region, stating that this was his mission’s most important objective. The UNMIK chief said that his mission would work on the basis of full status neutrality, and exclusively according to the mandate provided by Resolution 1244.
