A new government, expected on Monday, will be Serbia's 11th since the multi-party system was reintroduced in the country in 1990. In the past 18 years, Serbia has had ten prime ministers and acting prime ministers, with only two of them managing to hold on to their office in two mandates: Mirko Marjanovic, SPS, and Vojislav Kostunica, DSS. Timeline: Serbia's governments since 1990 After the first multi-party elections held in 1990, the Socialist Party of Serbia formally seized control over the country that it would not relinquish for the next ten years. The first premier from the ranks of the Socialists was Dragutin Zelenovic, heading the cabinet from January until December 1991. Radoman Bozovic, SPS, took over and was at the helm until February 1993, when Nikola Sainovic, SPS, became the new premier. Mirko Marjanovic, SPS, was prime minister in two mandates, from March 1994, until party founder and leader and Serbian and Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was ousted in October 2000. From October 24, 2000, until January 25, 2001, Milomir Minic, SPS, headed Serbia's so-called interim government. Zoran Djindjic, DS, and his cabinet were sworn in on January 25, 2001. Djindjic was the serving prime minister when he was assassinated on March 12, 2003. After this, in March that year, DOS coalition leaders Nebojsa Covic and Zarko Korac took turns as acting PMs. Zoran Zivkovic, DS, was appointed and remained at the helm of the cabinet from March 18, 2003, until March 3, 2004. Vojislav Kostunica, DSS, was premier in two mandates, from March 3, 2004.
