More than two-thirds of citizens support Serbia’s EU integration, according to the latest information from the government’s EU Integration Office. Citizens support Serbia’s integration because of the possibilities for education or work in EU countries, improvements to the standard of living, and the opportunity for visa-free travel. Public support for EU rising fast If a referendum on joining the EU was held currently, 67 percent of voters would support EU membership, while 12 percent would be against. Researchers claim that the pro-EU attitude among the population is 20 percent higher than it was in November 2007. The EU Integration Office, the European Commission, the French embassy and Erste Bank have organized a competition for the best media feature on the subject, because the media have an important role in informing the public about the EU integration process. The competition is open to radio and television reporters, newspaper journalists, as well as those who report on the European context of the development of small and medium-sized companies in Serbia, says Head of the European Commission Delegation Josep Lloveras. "If the citizens do not understand or support European integration, the process will be neither fast nor successful. They need to be informed that it is not an abstract process, but one that will influence their everyday lives,” Lloveras explained. "Journalists are the ones who can actually do that job, and it is very important for the information to permeate beyond just Belgrade and be available to all Serbian citizens”, he said. The competition will be open until November 1, and entries should be sent to the government’s EU Integration Office. The best entries will win a trip to Brussels and Paris, as well as the opportunity to talk to European and French officials about the most pressing issues relating to the EU.
