French Ambassador Jean Francois Terral says the Western Balkan states must meet the conditions of Copenhagen and Hague cooperation to join the EU. At a seminar at the French Cultural Center on France’s assumption of the EU presidency, Terral said that France’s policies towards the region would be policies of continuity and acceleration. "Hague, Copenhagen cooperation key to integration" He predicted that the issue of whether there would be enlargement after the Irish rejection of the Lisbon Treaty would be resolved before any of the Western Balkan countries were ready for EU membership. “How will be get out of this crisis? I do not know, but I am convinced that we will. We are used to facing crises, and we have progressed through experience,” Terral said. The ambassador explained that there was a strong will and determination to solve the problem of the Lisbon Treaty by next spring, which was when the European Parliament elections were scheduled. He said that the priorities of the French presidency would be institutional change, membership negotiations with Croatia and Turkey, and economic issues. Terral said that other key elements of the French program were energy policy, environmental protection, immigration, a common agricultural policy, and a common foreign and security policy. The ambassador said that this was the 12th French EU presidency, adding that he hoped it would be the last, “because it is completely natural for us to move into the Lisbon system.” Josep Lloveras, Francois Terral at a press conference yesterday (FoNet)
