A spokesman for UNMIK in Pristina said today that this UN mission will not support implementation of the Ahtisaari plan for Kosovo's supervised independence. The reason for this, Alexander Ivanko told reporters, is that the plan was not accepted in the UN Security Council. UNMIK won't support Ahtisaari plan When asked why then this document was implemented by former UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker, Ivanko said that "at the time, the Ahtisaari plan was the only document, while since last Friday, UNMIK has UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's report" as the basis for the mission's actions in the field. He also commented on announcements that the Serb parliament in Kosovo will convene on June 28, and dubbed this "virtual reality". The event scheduled for St. Vitus Day (Vidovdan), and the assembly it will form, Ivanko said, "is not something that can function or have influence in the field". Kosovo police, KPS, spokesman Veton Elshani told the news conference that this organization is aware that the Serbs will celebrate Vidovdan. For this reason, KPS is making plans to maintain safety of citizens, he said. And for the sake of security, he continued, it is possible that the announced walk from Kosovska Mitrovica to Gazimestan may be canceled. Instead, transportation for participants who wish to go to Gazimestan will be organized, Elshani said. Beside being a religious holiday for the Orthodox Serb Christians, Vidovdan is also the anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo, in Gazimestan, just outside of Pristina, where in 1389 the mediaeval Serbian state lost the key battle that gave way to the subsequent Turkish invasion.
