Although Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic says Fatmir Sejdiu will not address the UN Security Council as Kosovo president, Pristina media report otherwise. Should that information prove to be true, it will be the first time that a representative of Kosovo has formally participated at a Security Council session. Sejdiu to address UN as Kosovo president? The Kosovo president’s cabinet confirmed that Sejdiu would be attending Friday’s session. According to a statement, Sejdiu was invited, will attend, and will address the Security Council in the capacity of president of Kosovo. Should this information prove to be accurate, it will be the first time that representatives from Serbia and Kosovo will have attended a regular session of a UN body on an equal footing. Another break from the past will be the possible absence of UNMIK Chief Joachim Ruecker at a Security Council session on Kosovo. Should that occur, it will be the first time since Resolution 1244 was passed that the UNMIK chief will have been absent at such a session. There has been no confirmation from UNMIK of whether Ruecker will attend Friday’s session or not. UNMIK spokesman Alexander Ivanko would only confirm that Ruecker’s mandate was coming to an end. “I can say that the UN secretary-general intends to appoint Ambassador Lamberto Zannier as the new UNMIK chief,“ said Ivanko. This decision will most probably come into force on Friday, said the spokesman. The U.S. mission’s press secretary Benjamin Chang said that the members would be addressed by both Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Serbian President Boris Tadic. “The participants will also be addressed by Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu,“ said Chang, after which, he added, a discussion would follow where the Security Council ambassadors would put forward their opinions. The session will be open to the media, said the U.S. official, whose country is chairing the Security Council this month. Fatmir Sejdiu (FoNet, archive)
