UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s letter concerning plans for UNMIK’s reconfiguration has been delivered to Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu, reports DPA. “We are reconfiguring UNMIK in line with the situation on the ground,” the German agency was informed by a Western diplomat. Ban sends "reconfiguration plans" The details of the letter, whose aim is to settle legal and diplomatic uncertainty with regards to UNMIK’s scaled-down role and the transfer of greater powers to local authorities and the EU mission, are expected to be released later today. Ban sent an identical letter to President Boris Tadic, whose cabinet Thursday confirmed that the letter had arrived. The president's response to the proposals will be made public after he officially dispatches it to the UN secretary-general, Tadic's office said. The news comes after EU member-state defense ministers stressed that the powers of peacekeeping missions in Kosovo had to be clearly defined. The ministers, led by Slovenia’s Karel Erjavec, began a formal two-day meeting in Brussels today, the main themes of which were the EULEX and KFOR peacekeeping missions. The ministers are discussing the role and functioning of the KFOR mission post-June 15 when the Kosovo Constitution comes into force, in light of the deployment of the EULEX mission and UNMIK’s role. At the same time, NATO, which will confirm its role and function in Kosovo at the meeting, is demanding further explanations, stressing that the missions’ powers must be clearly defined, which is why it is calling on the EU and UN to specify the powers of their peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, so that relations are clearly set out.
