The identity of Hague fugitive Stojan Zupljanin has been confirmed on the basis of DNA tests, says Belgrade District Court spokeswoman Ivana Ramic. Zupljanin, who was arrested in Pancevo yesterday, denied his identity at the Special Court, and claimed that he was Branislav Vukadin. Zupljanin's identity confirmed B92 understands that this was his assumed identity, and that Vukadin has been dead for some time. The Hague fugitive's fingerprints, B92 understands, were filed under the name of Branislav Vukadin, which was why a DNA analysis was necessary. His personal ID card with his assumed identity was issued in Backa Palanka. One other fugitive, Vlastimir Djordjevic, was also carrying the identity card of a dead man when he was arrested in 2007. Earlier, Zupljanin’s assigned legal counsel Igor Pantelic confirmed that the suspect had introduced himself to the judge as Branislav Vukadin. Pantelic said that a DNA analysis of the suspect’s blood would be complete during the afternoon. The lawyer said that he had been present when the suspect’s fingerprints and blood sample had been taken. Zupljanin was transferred to the Special Court just after 13:00 CET, after which he was brought before the investigative judge. However, questioning never really even got under way, as, first, it must be established that the man in question is indeed Zupljanin. Once all the investigative work is complete, proceedings will resume in accordance with the law. President of the National Council for Cooperation with the Hague Rasim Ljajic told B92 that the claims coming from the Hague Tribunal that the other fugitives were also within reach of the Serbian authorities were nonsense and politically inappropriate. Ljajic stressed that Zupljanin’s arrest had been carried out at, as he put it, a delicate and sensitive political juncture for Serbia as talks over formation of a new government were ongoing, and said that this was not linked to the other Hague fugitives and their accomplices. He said that Serbia was doing all it could to meet its international commitments to bring the remaining fugitives to justice. (Tanjug)
