Deputy Premier Bozidar Djelic, DS, has begun a three-day visit to the European Union Tuesday. Djelic will present a draft national program for Serbia's integration as he meets with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, and several other commissioners. "Serbia EU candidate in 2008" Before the meeting, he told reportes he expected Serbia to become an EU membership candidate on Dec. 15, 2008. During his visit, the outgoing deputy prime minister will also give a lecture at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, sources at his office confirmed for Tanjug. Meanwhile in Belgrade, government's EU Integration Office chief Tanja Miscevic said that Serbia will obtain the EU candidate status in 2009. Implementation of the national integration program should start by the end of the year, she added. Speaking in an interview to the Belgrade daily Blic, she said that the draft program, which the government adopted last week, contained clear steps and measures under which the state would abolish trade monopolies and enable citizens to travel without visas. If laws on trade, finance, social policy, education, science, technology and environment protection are adopted in time and if new bodies and services envisaged under the program are formed, Serbia should meet all membership conditions by 2012, Miscevic added.
