President Boris Tadic, DS, wants a socially responsible government to be formed as soon as possible, preferably by the end of June. “All who want this nation to have a future and perspective understand that they do not want to have anything to do with the Democratic Party of Serbia now that it has decided to annul the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) and link itself to the Serb Radical Party (SRS),” Tadic said. Tadic: Socially responsible cabinet If Serbia were to say that it did not want to go towards Europe, then, Europe would devise a new enlargement strategy, and Serbia would be excluded from that strategy. In that case Serbia would suffer, not Europe. The president did not want to comment on media speculation concerning what the “For a European Serbia” coalition was willing to offer the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) in the negotiations on forming a government. Commenting on analysts’ opinions that the SPS had not truly reformed, Tadic said that its attitude towards Slobodan Milosevic’s legacy and his family, as well as its attitude towards the Hague Tribunal could be possible instability factors within a government, adding that “our entire society has not been reformed enough”. “That is exactly why we need a government that will conduct serious social reforms, and correct the injustice of the neediest suffering most in that very process of reform,” the DS leader surmised. He concluded that the Democratic Party (DS) was not expecting new elections and that it would do everything it could for the will of the people at the May 11 elections to materialize in the form of a stable and socially responsible government. Meanwhile, DS official Nada Kolundzija has said that she expects the process of forming a new government to speed up following JS’s decision to enter a coalition with the “For a European Serbia” list. “The process of forming a government will now move relatively fast, but I cannot predict when it will be complete,” Kolundzija said, adding that JS’s decision confirmed the optimism of the “For a European Serbia” that it would form a parliamentary majority. She said that she was convinced that the JS’s coalition partners, the SPS and the Associated Pensioners’ Party (PUPS), would also take a decision to form a coalition with the pro-European bloc. Kolundzija said that it had been “politically proper” for the DS not to pressure the coalition gathered around the Socialists into negotiations over a government. “We gave them time to make good on their promises from the election campaign to speak to the Radicals and DSS-NS regarding the formation of a government. They reached a point where it became evident that their manifesto goals were not attainable without European integration, and where there was no reason to form a government that would lead Serbia into isolation,” Kolundzija explained. If Serbia were to say that it did not want to go towards Europe, then, Europe would devise a new enlargement strategy, and Serbia would be excluded from that strategy. In that case Serbia would suffer, not Europe.

The president did not want to comment on media speculation concerning what the “For a European Serbia” coalition was willing to offer the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) in the negotiations on forming a government.

Commenting on analysts’ opinions that the SPS had not truly reformed, Tadić said that its attitude towards Slobodan Milošević’s legacy and his family, as well as its attitude towards the Hague Tribunal could be possible instability factors within a government, adding that “our entire society has not been reformed enough”.
