The government yesterday formulated a Draft National Program for Serbia's Integration into the EU, Beta reported. This was confirmed by outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, DS. Govt. puts together EU integration program After the government session, Djelic told a news conference that this is a comprehensive document of over 1,000 pages, which is to represent "the Holy Scripture" for Serbia until it joins the EU. According to him, work on the program took around six months, and it encompasses all the measures Serbia needs to fulfill on its way to the Union, and all the actions it must take to harmonize legislation. He added that, after adopting the document, the next government will have "everything prepared" for Serbia to become an EU member by 2012, but that the state will also demonstrate its readiness to begin formal negotiations on candidate status by the end of 2008. Djelic announced a public debate on the document within a month, adding that he will discuss the draft with numerous EU commissioners in Brussels next week. The director of the government Office for Association with the EU, Tanja Miscevic, said that she is very proud of having worked on the draft, but also because Serbia has shown its considerable capabilities to attain the status of a candidate for EU membership. She thanked the Slovenian and French governments for their help with drafting the document, and called on local self-governments in Serbia, on chambers of commerce and NGOs to participate in the public debate and give their opinion on potential flaws in the draft. The working version of the plan will be presented on June 9. Djelic with 'the Holy Scripture' (Tanjug)
