Crucial UN decisions regarding the deployment of EULEX are yet to be made, Beta news agency quoted its sources in Brussels. EULEX, the European Union's planned mission to Kosovo, will no doubt cooperate with the UN, with talks currently being held to that aim and progress being made toward the necessary coordination between the EU and UN in Kosovo, EU officials in Brussels told Beta. Report: Solana awaiting Ban decision They pointed out that the situation was "still complex, because there was no agreement on the matter at the UN Security Council and that crucial UN decisions are yet to be made". The news agency's sources said this had been the topic of a recent talk between EU High Representative Javier Solana and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, when Solana strongly stressed the great importance of EULEX being deployed in Kosovo as soon as possible. Officials at the EU Council of Ministers said the matter had been discussed at the EU Political and Security Committee, when it was hinted that UNMIK would cede some functions to EULEX, which would mainly assist Pristina authorities after they proclaim the constitution effective throughout the territory of Kosovo on June 15. Those directly in charge of EU policy in Kosovo conclude that UN leaders "understand the desire of Brussels to deploy EULEX as soon as possible, but nothing can be done outside the UN, because the legal framework of Resolution 1244 guarantees certain rules and security". On June 4, before the European Parliament in Brussels, Solana will report on and discuss foreign and security policy of the EU. Emphasis will be laid especially on the situation in Kosovo and the EU's efforts to deploy EULEX there in agreement with the UN. Solana and the members of the European Parliament may give more attention to the internal political situation in Serbia, Beta said. Officials close to Solana told the agency that the EU and U. continued to be in touch and that "everything indicated that they would continue their presence in Kosovo together".
