The Great People's Assembly of the Serb National Council (SNV), was held in Zagreb, Croatia, on Saturday. Top Croatian, Serbia and Republika Srpska (RS) officials, as well as dignitaries of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), took the floor at the meeting of the highest body of Serb self-government in Croatia. The document adds that every future step that will be made in boosting the two countries' mutual relations will also help improve the status of Serbs in Croatia and the atmosphere for the realization of their rights. It is also specified that a sustainable return of Serb refugees is not possible without special state measures, as well as that an agreement to that effect between ethnic Serbs and the Croatian government could represent a solid basis for a modification of the Serbs' present status which is not satisfactory, particularly when it comes to employment. SNV President Milorad Pupovac underlined in his speech that the assembly was aimed at encouraging the Serbs in Croatia to persevere in preserving their own identity in order to regain their rights, as well as to organize themselves in a better way. Croatian President Stjepan Mesic spoke of the importance the Serbs had in the history of his country, and at present, and expressed a wish for better relations between Serbia and Croatia. “The task ahead of all of us is to make it possible for the Serbs in Croatia to live better and to help the relations between the two countries develop to the benefit of both nations,” said envoy of the Serbian president and President of the Executive Council of Vojvodina Bojan Pajtic.
