The Democrats (DS) say that should a deal be struck with the Socialists (SPS) on the state level, they could opt for a coalition in Vojvodina as well. This would come despite the fact that the DS-led ticket, known as "For a European Vojvodina", has the majority in the provincial assembly. I have the Hungarian Coalition and the 'Together for Vojvodina' in mind first and foremost," party vice president Bojan Pajtic said in an interview for today's Politika. "The SPS can be considered as a partner only if it entered the Serbian government too, with the 'For a European Serbia' ticket, which I believe will happen, and if the SPS sets up authorities with our lists on the local level. That includes Belgrade." According to this Vojvodina-based party official, Belgrade is not a separate issue from that of the new government in Serbia. "It is an important international question, who the Belgrade mayor will be. It is vital that the most important posts for the destiny of this state are filled with people who conduct a pro-euro policy," Pajtic added. According to him, should the Socialists be ready to "strategically cooperate with the Democrats in all local governments where together they make up the majority", then it would "make sense for them to participate where the DS does not need partners". "I don't think that Belgrade is lost. I believe that once the majority on the state level is formed by the "For a European Serbia" ticket, the SPS-led list, and the [ethnic] minority parties, Belgrade will become a subject of negotiations once again," Pajtic was optimistic.
