The verdicts have been delivered in the Medak Pocket war crimes trial at the Zagreb District Court. First-accused Croatian General Rahim Ademi has been acquitted on all charges, while second-accused General Mirko Norac has been sentenced to seven years behind bars. Medak verdict: Ademi free, Norac gets 7 years The verdict was delivered today by Judge Marin Mrcela (presiding), and comes just over a year after the trial began. Both generals were accused of command responsibility for crimes committed against civilians during the Medak Pocket military operation. They were accused of not taking preventive measure during the offensive to stop the murder of civilians, looting, the destruction of homes, and the torture of prisoners-of-war. According to the indictment, 23 Serb civilians and 5 prisoners were killed during the Medak Pocket action, several of whose bodies carried signs of extreme torture and mutilation. Over 300 homes and other buildings were also destroyed, livestock was slaughtered, and valuables looted. The verdicts are open to appeal at the Croatian Supreme Court. During the proceedings, Ademi had been out on bail while Norac had been in prison in Lipovica, serving a 12-year sentence for the mass liquidation of Serb civilians in the Gospic region in the autumn of 1991.
