A senior DS official says the offer to the SPS to form a government stands, despite the signed deal to form a local Belgrade government with the SRS and DSS-NS. “Nothing’s been settled yet, we are still talking,” Dragoljub Micunovic told daily Politika, adding that even though the Democratic Party’s (DS) executive committee had stated that the formation of local governments was down to local committees themselves, Belgrade was nonetheless the capital and largest city, not just some backwater. DS: Offer to Socialists still stands “One other thing needs to be taken into consideration: mayors are no longer elected directly, and they can be changed at any time if they receive a vote of no confidence. Therefore, the Socialist Party of Party (SPS) could behave differently at local level if they form a government with us at state level,” Micunovic said. He added that the most important thing for the DS was that the SPS accepted the principles on which the government was to be formed in order to ensure fast and stable progress for Serbia through European integration. Asked how the SPS had changed and what the difference was between the SPS and the Serb Radical Party (SRS), and why the SRS was not an acceptable partner and the SPS was, Micunovic said that the Socialists had shown a readiness to adapt to new times. “For example, they’ve entered the socialist faction within the Council of Europe assembly, while the Radicals have not done anything similar. The Socialists want to enter the Socialist International and other international organizations…the Socialists do not talk about the Karlovac-Virovitica border, they do not refer to relations with Europe as being ‘unfriendly,’” he pointed out. The DS official said that the SPS had the chance to become a reformist socialist party with new people. Dragoljub Micunovic (FoNet archive)
